The story of Bartolome is echoed today in the life of Don Samuel Ruiz, bishop of San Cristobal de las Casas, who has taken on the task of awakening concern for the exploited indigenous people of Chiapas. -

Massive foreign loans have to be repaid by underdeveloped countries at the expense of basic human needs. The first world is not giving the Third World a chance to develop – and that may ultimately be the undoing of us all.
