In the colonial era, Britain and France shared out most of the Pacific islands between them. The New Hebrides were unique in being colonised by both countries. The resulting “Condominium” meant two of everything – even to the extent that when a policeman went out on a beat, there had to be two – one dressed as an English bobby, the other as a French Gendarme.
