By 1986 the population of Korea had doubled over the previous twenty years. In view of this, the Korean government felt it necessary to try and limit families to a maximum of two children. Pressure to limit families caused particular problems for women who embraced Christianity but remained married to non-Christian husbands and also for the Catholic priests and nuns who ministered to them.
