When Pope John Paul came to visit Holland in May 1985, liberal elements in the Catholic Church organised a meeting on the 8th of May, to show to the world that there was a different Catholic Church to the one the Pope would be meeting. Fifteen thousand people turned up. The 8th of May Movement, as it is called, continues as a focus for liberal elements in the Dutch Catholic Church.
