With their country ravaged by civil war, 800,000 Liberians are now (1996) living in exile in neighbouring West African countries. An Irish St. Louis nun, Miriam Therese O’Brien, works closely with Liberians coordinating emergency relief projects. She is highly critical of the dependency created by UN policies in refugee situations. Sr. Miriam’s innovative self-help approach is producing results.
