Radharc Programme 3
(reconstructed 2015)

PENAL CROSSES
BLESSING THE AER LINGUS FLEET
MANNERS IN CHURCH

Country: Ireland
1st Broadcast: 15th September 1962
Duration: 28’25”

The original audio for this programme has suffered some losses, including most of the synch sound for its first segment. Fortunately production documents in the Radharc Paper Collection included a full script for ‘Penal Crosses’, and a corresponding new voice track has been recorded for reference.

Penal Crosses From being covertly portable in penal times to pilgrimage souvenirs in better days, the history and symbolism of this traditional Irish crucifix is shared and the craft of making them expertly demonstrated.

Blessing the Aer Lingus Fleet Radharc opens up the subject of air travel, addressing its anxieties with reassuring confidence in both religion and science, mapping the journeys of famous Irish saints and the ways of modern aviation. Features strong photography of gleaming aircraft, cockpit controls and runway activity, including the blessing.

Manners in Church A quirky congregation demonstrates some less than ideal behaviour in this comedic instruction piece.
