Tax on Kerry Cows
Retreat
Kylemore Abbey

Country: Ireland
1st Broadcast: 8th November 1962
Duration: 27’54”

Tax on Kerry Cows [also identified as ‘Fund Raising’, ‘Cows and Churches’, ‘Milking the Faithful’] The Asdee and Ballylongford churches of Co. Kerry, in need of expensive repairs and alterations, collect a levy from the local shopkeepers and cattle farmers (who must pay £1 per annum per animal). Includes scenes of Irish dairy culture in a transitional period when milk churns were still brought to the creamery on donkey carts as well as tractors, and also a whimsical rumination on the bovine perspective.

Retreat Newcomer Des Keogh opens this report on St Anthony’s Retreat House, run by the Capuchins in Raheny Co. Dublin, where modern men can take a weekend away for an enclosed residential break of prayer and reflection.

Kylemore Abbey At the time of filming this remote Victorian-gothic mansion in Connemara Co. Galway, the Belgian Benedictine community of nuns were still running a girl’s boarding school there. They share the long history of their order and its unusual privileges as the practise of their vocation is explored.
