Fergal was sent as a missionary to Salzburg by Pepin, King of the Franks. He became Abbot of St. Peter’s monastery, later Bishop, and built a cathedral counted as a wonder of the world in the year 774. He wrote on the nature of the world suggesting that the earth was round. He was summoned to Rome to stand trial, but extricated himself. Galileo fared less well 800 years later!
