As early as the 7th century, Irish pilgrims were travelling all over Europe – some going to Compostella, some to Rome and some continuing onwards to India taking in the Middle East and Egypt en route. Monasteries were established all over Europe to help serve the pilgrims, staffed entirely by Irish monks and known as Schottenkloster. Narrated by Cyril Cusack.
