St. Finian’s College, Mullingar, was chosen by the Irish bishops for a rather unusual experiment in Irish Church music. A special School of Music, Scola Cantorum, was initiated to train promising young musicians in the disciplines of Church music alongside the normal secondary school academic subjects. The effects of the Scola are already being felt as its graduates become organists and choirmasters throughout Ireland.
