There are interviews with the parish priest, nuns, and the children in the convent school. In 1962, there were 117 nuns alive who were born in Doon. Sick Calls: This short film describes the rites and rituals involved in administering the Sacrament of Extreme Unction to people. It shows what preparations should be made for the reception of this sacrament. Stamps: This short film answers the question: What happened to those stamps we saved for the missions? Country: Ireland Year: 8.11.1962 Dur: 26.40 Tax on Kerry Cows [Fund Raising]: This segment was broadcast under several titles, including – ‘A Tax on Kerry Cows’, ‘Fund Raisers’, ‘Cows and Churches’ and ‘Milking the Faithful’. In this popular piece we learn of an unusual scheme in Ballylongford, in the Diocese of Kerry to gather funds for the two churches which are damp and wet. The parishoners of the Ballylongford imposed on themselves a levy of £1 a year per cow for five years. We are shown how the scheme operates. Retreat: The second part of this programme deals with a weekend retreat. It was made in St. Anthony’s Retreat House, Raheny. We learn how a retreat is conducted and what it means. Kylemore Abbey: The final film in this programme was made during a visit to the rebuilt and extended Kylemore Abbey in Connemara which had burned down a few years previously. Korea: This film tells the story of the Korean War and the deaths of seven priests. It deals especially with the life and death of Fr. Tony Collier. Many said it was impossible due not only to shortage of money but also due to remoteness of the area and the almost impossible task of getting materials to the site. With volunteers from the area and Fr. Sears as clerk of works, builder, etc. the project was completed. There are interviews with Fr. Sears and local people. Station Mass: The preparation that takes place when a house has been chosen for the celebration of mass. In this film, Mrs. D. It was filmed in Ballybunnion on an August weekend. Visitors and residents in the area are interviewed. Traditional Prayers: This item shows how in rural Ireland there are preserved traditional prayers to accompany all actions of daily life: rising, eating, crossing streams, when the clock strikes, raking out the fire and going to bed. Kenmare: The final item is a short story from Kenmare. It tells how the people of Kenmare got a church, how the church got a steeple, and how the steeple got a weathercock on top. He specialises in religious postage stamps and from his album he shows scenes from the scriptures, from lives of the saints, and from the religious life of countries all over the world. He is a German resident in Ireland and is chef on the staff of a Dublin hospital. (Please note that footage for this segment is unavailable) Touist, Co. Kerry: This documentary features a place, which very few people ever heard mentioned – Touist, Co. Kerry. Touist’s problem is depopulation and the answer which it is trying, on a basis of community effort, is to sell itself as a tourist resort. Radharc gives an interim report on the progress to date and shows a community that has decided to face its problems instead of running away from them. Touist in 1840 had a population of 7,400. It was built in honour of one of the great leaders of the Land War, Fr. Casey, the parish priest. This film was made in the early 1960s and includes interviews with elderly people who remembered the late stages of the land war and the vivid stories regaled by their parents and elders. Each has a little church that contains a strange relic of the past. A ship’s bell resides in Quilty while a wooden mass hut is contained in Kilbaha. The story behind these relics is told in this programme. Father Theobald Matthew: This is a biography in words and pictures of the Capuchin friar, Fr. Theobald Matthew who achieved world fame as the “Apostle of Temperance”. He has been recognised as “the man who lifted a nation off its knees”. Sadly Fr.
